Dr Jim Bamber awarded OAA Gold Medal
21 May 2026
The OAA was delighted to award the OAA Gold Medal to Dr Jim Bamber at the 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting in Liverpool, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to obstetric anaesthesia and to the Association.
The OAA Gold Medal is awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to obstetric anaesthesia and analgesia, or to the aims of the Association. Jim’s longstanding service to the OAA has had a profound impact, both through his role as Treasurer and through the many other ways he has supported and shaped the organisation over the years.
As Treasurer, Jim has overseen the Association’s finances with characteristic care and integrity, while also helping to drive significant organisational change. He has been instrumental in strengthening the OAA’s digital presence, including the redevelopment of the Association’s websites and membership systems, the expansion of its online resources, and the growth of its communications and social media activity. His contribution has helped elevate the OAA’s visibility and reach, both for members and wider audiences.
As Jim comes to the end of his term as Treasurer, Dr Yavor Metodiev is now taking up the role.
Presenting the award, OAA President Dr Nuala Lucas said: “Jim has given extraordinary service to the Obstetric Anaesthetists’ Association over many years, with a combination of wisdom, integrity, calm judgement and quiet humour that has shaped the organisation in countless ways.
“He has been a trusted colleague and a steadfast supporter of obstetric anaesthesia and of the people within it. Much of what the OAA is today reflects the dedication and generosity he has given over so many years, often behind the scenes and without seeking recognition.”
Congratulations to Jim on this thoroughly deserved recognition.
