General
This 6-month fellowship is ideal for trainees wishing to pursue a consultant career with a specialist interest in obstetric anaesthesia. There are excellent opportunities to become involved in research and quality improvement projects, with previous fellows presenting work at national meetings. Fellows are also actively involved in multidisciplinary teaching, including simulation-based training.
Clinical
Clinical experience includes both elective and emergency obstetric anaesthesia, with participation in the obstetric on-call rota. Fellows have opportunities to attend high-risk obstetric and maternal medicine clinics, contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and participate in the planning and management of complex cases.
Hospital
The Royal London Hospital is a busy tertiary referral centre for maternal and fetal medicine, with approximately 4,500 deliveries per year. It is a maternal medicine centre managing a culturally diverse, high-risk population, including patients with cardiac, renal, and neurosurgical co-morbidities. The hospital also hosts a regional placenta accreta spectrum service, providing structured exposure to the multidisciplinary management of these complex cases. A dedicated consultant anaesthetist is assigned to the labour ward seven days per week.
