Oral & e-poster Presentations

We would like to thank all those who submitted abstracts to the OAA’s Annual Scientific Meeting 2021 - goes virtual. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, this year we received 224 abstracts. Each submission has been marked by four assessors; scores have been calculated following which oral and poster presentations have been awarded.

Five abstracts have been awarded an oral presentation in the Felicity Reynolds Prize. Another five of the top scoring abstracts have also been given an oral presentation in the Top Posters session. These will be presented in two sessions during the meeting. In addition, 160 e-posters will be available for viewing on the ASM Virtual Platform. All accepted abstracts will be included in the IJOA Supplement and posters will be hosted on the OAA website after the meeting.

In keeping with current importance of research governance, we insisted that projects were approved by either an ethics or audit committee or by the local Caldicott Guardian. This year the number of submissions not following these guidelines was minimal, although a small number were rejected where this was not clearly stated. As in previous years we have not accepted case reports without confirmation of written consent.

Given the large number of submissions it is not possible to give individual feedback to authors whose abstracts have not been accepted. We would suggest that unsuccessful authors contact members of their department with experience in publication who will hopefully be able to offer suitable and constructive advice on how to improve their work.

We would like to express our thanks to the judges who gave up their time to mark the abstracts. They are: Jim Bamber, Jeremy Campbell, Rachel Collis, Christina Laxton, Mark Nel, Abi Richardson, Vinnie Sodhi and Nicky Weale. We would also like to thank the OAA Secretariat for their help with maintaining the on-line submission system.

Oral Presentations - Felicity Reynolds and Top Poster sessions

This year we will be pre-recording all the oral abstract presentations. These recordings will be played at the conference during the Felicity Reynolds and Top Poster sessions, following which there will be a short, live question and answer session.  We will contact authors in the near future to provide details on pre-recording.

Ethics Approval: the OAA is committed to maintaining the highest possible standards of research ethics. As a result, during the course of your presentation you are requested to state by whom your work was approved. This may be your local ethics committee, audit committee or hospital Caldicott Guardian. If your work was submitted to a clinical trials registry, this should also be stated. By including this information, we hope to ensure that work of the highest quality is presented encouraging others to maintain these high standards.
