NOAD

After much discussion the OAA Executive Committee has decided to decommission the National Obstetric Anaesthetic Database (NOAD). Whilst the NOAD has been a valuable resource for the obstetric anaesthetic community, the feedback received by the OAA has indicated that NOAD in its current format may no longer be fulfilling the current and future needs of our members and contributory hospitals. There will be no further data collection for NOAD and no further calls for 2015/16 data. All data received from hospitals since the previous the publication of the last report up to 01.09.2016 will be analysed and published.

The OAA intends to replace NOAD with a new annual national obstetric anaesthetic data collection with a focus on quality and outcome measures relevant to obstetric anaesthesia. It is expected that this new data collection will supplement both the new NHS England National Maternity Dashboard currently under development as well as the Hospital Episode Statistics data provided by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). It is intended that the reports of the new national data collection will be useful to consultant leads for obstetric anaesthesia and their hospitals for bench marking and service development.

As part of the development and implementation process for the new national data collection, the OAA Executive Committee intends to set up a Quality and Outcomes Subcommittee. In due course there will be a consultation with the membership and other stakeholders to ensure that the data collection will be feasible and pragmatic and that its reports will be informative and relevant.

This will be an exciting new project for the OAA and we hope that the membership and particularly the lead consultants will provide the same support and enthusiasm to this new endeavour as was given to NOAD. The Executive Committee on behalf of the OAA would like to thank all the lead consultants and other colleagues who have contributed to NOAD over the past 17 years.
