The Obstetric Anaesthetists' Association (OAA) is a Registered Charity, formed in 1969 with the aim of promoting the highest standards of anaesthetic practice in the care of mother and baby.
Currently, we have around 2500 members, of whom about 80% are in the UK, with the rest spread around the five continents. Learn about the benefits of membership.
The core activities of the OAA are:
- Educating and training anaesthetists and other health professionals. We hold a number of regular meetings and courses throughout the year. Members enjoy discounted rates and are granted online access to lectures after the meeting, even if they did not attend. Occasional overseas ‘outreach’ meetings are held in developing countries.
- Provision of accurate information to the public about obstetric anaesthesia and pain relief. Our information is freely available in over 30 languages. We also provide a free app (Android and iPhone/iPad) bringing all the translations together, for health professionals working where there is no Internet access.
- Distribution to members of its journal, Members receive International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia (IJOA) and enjoy free online access.
Other key activities of the OAA include:
- Distribution via the website of useful clinical guidelines that colleagues may use in developing their own local versions.
- Giving members access to the results of OAA-approved surveys, relating to current obstetric anaesthetic practice and to the results of the National Obstetric Anaesthesia Database (NOAD), which provides an overview of national practice year-on-year. Learn more.
- Provision of various grants and bursaries from its charitable fund.
The activities of the OAA are overseen by its elected Executive Committee. The day-to-day running of the OAA is undertaken by its secretariat, based in London.
